Why You Need to be Active
The science and statistics surrounding the importance of regular, vigorous exercise is stunning:
- Adults who are physically active in their 50s and early 60s are 35 percent less likely to die in the next eight years than those who are sedentary.
- The direct costs of lack of physical activity, defined conservatively
as absence of leisure-time physical activity, are approximately 24
billion dollars per year and when combined with the direct costs of obesity, total nearly 100 billion dollars per year.
- Adults who exercise regularly reduce the risk of death from heart attack by 30 to 40 percent.
- Men who engage in strenuous exercise at least three times per week have an almost 70% lower risk than other patients their age of being diagnosed with high-grade advanced prostate cancer.
- People who lose one pound per year over ten years and cut their risk of osteoarthritis by 50%.
- Specific spinal exercise following the first episode of lower back pain reduces recurrence of back pain by 45%.
The ability to exercise with sufficient intensity and frequency that challenges the mind and body, becomes increasingly important over the age of 30. A host of medical issues including high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, excessive body fat, early onset of osteoarthritis, loss of bone density and muscle mass and sleep deprivation stem from inadequate exercise. And, the leading cause of inactivity, in people under the age of 45, is an unresolved musculoskeletal injury - a sprain, strain or surgery of the joints, muscles, tendons or ligaments of the body.
Too often, injured people lower their expectations to a low level and settle for a lifetime of relative inactivity in order to not provoke symptoms. A lifetime of avoidance, however, is a life only partially lived.
Here, we'll talk about how we help you live life fully; how to get past injuries or surgeries and pour yourself into a lifestyle that embraces the life-enhancing effects of vigourous exercise; how we use what our friend and former client, Nick Grant, PhD, refers to as our "wisdom system": The Sports Center Training System.
We invite you to become a part of the discussion. By posting your comments, ideas, experiences and insights for others to read, you help build a health oriented, live life to the fullest community!
